Maitre Chocolatier: No Such Thing as Too Much Chocolate

Great movies deserve sequels, the same goes for great dates. Since our Valentines date didn't go as smoothly as planned, we went on another food adventure, this time at Maitre Chocolatier. No gifts, no dressing up, just the two of us enjoying each other's company and some pretty kick ass food.

The restaurant was still set up for V-day when we went there. We were greeted by dozens of hearts hanging around the whole place. There weren't a lot of people yet since it was a little early for dinner, giving us a chance to look around and take pictures. They have so many chocolates to choose from - Lindt, Ferrero, and even Kinder Bueno! There is also a display of their gelato near the entrance that made me want to have dessert even before I saw their menu.

Classic Hot Chocolate (150) Boyfriend started the evening with a cup of Lindt classic hot chocolate. It was thick, rich and extremely chocolatey with just the right amount of sweetness and a slight bitter taste. It was served with a piece of biscotti that we didn't care much about. It wasn't in any way the biscotti's fault, but the hot chocolate really demands for attention.

Nutella Hot Chocolate (150) And because for me, sweeter is always better, I had a cup of one of their bestsellers, the Nutella hot chocolate. It was thinner than the classic hot choco, but the Nutella flavor is really there. I started by sipping using my spoon but that wasn't enough. It was too good that I had no other choice but to drink it all up straight from the cup.

Grilled Pork Chop in White Chocolate Tartar Sauce (238) Our waitress recommended this as one of our entrees and we gladly obliged. The thick slab of porkchop didn't disappoint. It was cooked to perfection, tender and seasoned impeccably. It came with grilled carrots and cucumber that add a nice crunch to the dish. The tartar sauce was also delicious but we couldn't really taste the white chocolate. In spite of that, we were still very pleased with this dish.

Linguine in Pesto Sauce with Parm-Crusted Chicken (255) At this point, I think I should mention that the servings in Maitre are quite big. Boyfriend loved the pesto so much, but even with his big appetite and my help, he couldn't finish it. The chicken was fantastic as well, the parmesan crust was subtle and incredibly crispy. But what really made this dish stand out is the white chocolate and cheese sauce. I never thought that combination could work but it does, it really does. It's the perfect mix of sweet, salty and creamy. We can't get enought of it!

Angel's Confection (176) I'm not the biggest fan of mousse but this was actually pretty good. The Nutella mousse wasn't too sweet, and the thin layer of cake at the bottom goes well with it. This dessert could've been one dimensional, fortunately, the hazelnuts and white chocolate leaves on top add a layer of texture that made it mode interesting.

Sweet Revenge (250) Among all the chocolate cakes I have ever tasted, this one probably takes the cake (no pun intended). This little piece of Lindt heaven starts off with a moist, warm chocolate cake that is bursting with the most delicious dark chocolate ganache. One bite is all you need to feel that glorious chocolate explosion in your mouth. The combination of the warm cake with the vanilla ice cream tickles the senses, and at the same time, highlights the spiciness of the ganache. Yes, the ganache isn't just made of dark chocolate, it also has a kick in the form of chili. And if you need a break from all the chocolate, you can always take a bite of caramel tuille. But then again, who needs a break from chocolate?

Our experience in Maitre Chocolatier Boutique Cafe is really something to rave about. Everything was perfect - the food was amazing, the servers were nice, the place was romantic, and of course, the company was absolutely splendid. We will definitely come back here, over and over and over again. Maitre Chocolatier Boutique Cafe is located in Jupiter corner Astra St., Makati.
