Boyfriend and I recently celebrated our 5th year anniversary at Maxim's with their Sunday brunch. It was such a memorable meal and I thought it'd be the perfect entry to come back from my 5-month hiatus with.

Don-day Fresh Restaurant: Overdosing on Samgyupsal

Monday, August 1, 2011 § 4

The restaurants of Maginhawa St. are making people drive all the way to Teacher's Village for their unique offerings. A neighboring street, Malingap, also has it's own set of dining places that are waiting to be discovered. One of those being Don-day Fresh Restaurant. Don-day offers a Korean buffet for only 300 pesos that includes a wide variety of authentic Korean dishes and an all-you-can-eat Samgyupsal (Samgyeopsal). You can also get bottomless drinks for an additional 50 pesos.

Cafe Sweet Inspirations: A Rare Mongolian Treat

Wednesday, July 27, 2011 § 0

There was a time when Mongolian stir-fry was all the rage in Manila. However, years passed and branches of established restaurants such as Kublai's closed down and now, diners are left with few options (especially outside Makati). Cafe Sweet Inspirations is one of the few remaining restaurants in the city that offers a Mongolian buffet that is definitely worth your money. It has the same owners as Mongolian Quickstop, which offers big or small Mongolian bowls for people on a budget.

Chef Laudico's Bistro Filipino: An Awakening of Sorts

Monday, July 4, 2011 § 1

Boyfriend and I had the privilege of dining at Chef Laudico’s Bistro Filipino last Valentines Day. Yes, it was months ago, but I do have notes and doodles about that meal and I could not resist the urge to share them. When we availed of the ala carte brunch buffet for 788/head, we had no idea that we’d be in for such a wonderful gastronomical experience. For me, Bistro Filipino offers one of the best buffets in Manila. Sure, hotel buffets have everything you’d ever want to eat, but in an ala carte buffet such as this one, the food is served to you exactly how the chef envisioned it - plated masterfully, maintaining the integrity of each dish.

We started our journey through Bistro Filipino's menu with their Sinigang Consomme. This made us wish we ordered the Shiitake Mushroom Puree instead because the soup just tasted like a richer and thicker pork sinigang broth. Our salad, however, made up for it's failure. The 3 Kinds of Mango Salad was a delight to the palate! The combination of green, ripe and dried mangoes plus the kesong puti and dijon bagoong vinaigrette gave us the best salad we've ever had. Boyfriend doesn't like salads at all but we were fighting over this like we weren't in a buffet.

SamboKojin: Not your ordinary yakiniku

Thursday, June 16, 2011 § 4

Last Monday, as the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA championship title, boyfriend and I decided to celebrate by going to a yakiniku buffet. It was a choice between Yakimix or SamboKojin. Since I was craving for more than just grilled meat, we decided to go with the latter. The good thing about SamboKojin is that you can actually call them for dinner reservations unlike some restaurants that only accomodate walk ins.

For 499 (lunch) or 599 (dinner and weekends), you not only get a wide array of meats but also a variety of Japanese and Korean dishes that can satisfy your every craving. For starters, you can choose from their set of Korean appetizers that include bean sprouts, marble potatoes, anchovies and of course, kimchi. If that's not your thing, you can walk a few steps to the sushi table where they have really good unagi sushi and a wide assortment of maki and sashimi. From the picture above, you can see that the salmon sashimi plate is empty. It's probably because their salmon is fresh and fatty. You can always ask for refills from the chef if it runs out. You can also order beef sukiyaki from the waiters.
