Boyfriend and I rarely go to Megamall, and when we do, it's usually because we need to do something that can't be done elsewhere. With all the great things I've heard (and read) about Yabu, we were excited to try it out. And goodness, the trip was so worth it.
I was eager to start working on my sauce, so I started concocting right after the waiter left with our orders. To make the sauce, you start by pounding on those aromatic sesame seeds until it reaches an almost powdery consistency. Personally though, I prefer them a little coarse to add a little crisp to my sauce. Then, you add a scoop of the rich, brown tonkatsu sauce and stir. Next step, wait for your food to arrive because it's frustrating to have the perfect sauce ready, without having anything to dip in it.
Kurobuta Pork Set (515) We ordered Yabu's premium tonkatsu set that stars only the most tender of all porks, the Kurobuta pork. It is almost an inch thick, but because of its rich marbling, still soft and flavorful. The panko crust remained crispy even after an hour of eating, and its taste does not overpower the meat. It also came with miso soup, unlimited shredded cabbage, and a fruit bowl for dessert. We both got a little carried away with eating the shredded cabbage (especially me) because their sesame dressing was just so damn addicting. I could not get enough of it!
Hire Katsudon (265) Yabu has several meat variations for katsudon. You can choose between Rosu or pork loin, Hire or pork tenderloin, and lastly, chicken. We went for the tenderloin which is leaner than the pork loin. Boyfriend and I loved it! The slab of pork was huge, and the sauce that was generously drizzled over the pork, egg and rice, was light yet boasting with flavor. You can ask for extra servings of japanese rice, but hey, I'll do with just a huge bowl of cabbage and a bottle full of their sesame dressing.
Yabu: House of Katsu certainly lived up to the hype and all of our expectations. It may not be the most romantic place to take your loved one to, but the food really is quite amazing. And for its price, you definitely get your money's worth. Yabu: House of Katsu currently only has one branch as of the moment, and it can be found at SM Megamall. Be sure to make reservations of you plan on eating there during rush hour because the place gets packed.
